Dietitians of Canada (DC) applauds the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Ministry of Health Promotion for helping Ontarians prevent and manage diabetes. The diabetes strategy announced today includes increasing access to team-based care for prevention and management of diabetes. The Ministry of Health Promotion has collaborated with Dietitians of Canada to provide the Eatright Ontario Dietitian Advisory Service. EatRight Ontario gives consumers and health professionals easy access to expert nutrition advice from Registered Dietitians through a toll-free number 1-877-510-510-2 or a web based service at http://www.ontario.ca/EatRight. Residents of Ontario can call with their questions about diabetes, as well as many other aspects of nutrition-related chronic disease and healthy eating. This service is a component of the provincial Action Plan for Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) and recognizes the Registered Dietitian (RD) as an integral part of the strategy.

Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director for DC, emphasizes the importance of healthy eating in preventing and managing diabetes: "EatRight Ontario provides evidence-based advice, tailored to the individual's needs. Access to sound and reliable nutrition advice is key to promoting health and reducing the risk of developing diabetes and other chronic diseases. Our research has shown that users of the ERO service are very satisfied, and we are pleased that the MHP continues to support public access to RDs. The EatRight Ontario augments the service that DC provides through our popular website at http://www.dietitians.ca where consumers can link to nutrition fact sheets, FAQs and interactive tools that will help them assess their daily food intake and make wise food choices for better health."

Dietitians of Canada represents almost 6000 dietitians across Canada; 2400 registered dietitians reside in Ontario. DC is committed to promoting the health and well-being of consumers through food and nutrition.
